The Weekend Mindset

“Everybody’s working for the weekend…” sang the 80’s band, Loverboy.

When we hear a flashback to this song, it still resonates. Yet for a lot of people, the traditional working week and weekend — the 5 days of work, 2 days off post Industrial Revolution construct we have come to expect — has all but disappeared.

I’ve been running my own business for over a decade, so work is woven seamlessly through the web of my life. For example, I’m writing this blog post on a Saturday morning — stealing some quiet time alone with my thoughts. It’s a rare weekend indeed that I don’t turn my mind to something work related. On the flipside, being my own boss allows me to steal back a little time between Monday to Friday for the non-work related things that pop up. My ‘weekends’ can happen on any day of the week depending upon what I’m working on.

For over 20 years, experts have been predicting that work would become more flexible and the traditional notion of a full time job would change. In all workplaces, the future of work is here. The variations of a working week are increasing day by day. These variations stretch beyond those industries we traditionally associate with unconventional work hours such as retail or hospitality. Today, we don’t have to look far to find lots of these in action.
